She's Still Unusual: Cyndi Lauper -
posted: 9th March 2010

Cyndi Lauper can talk underwater with marbles in her mouth. Especially when it comes to appearances. The Moment caught up with the endearingly loquacious diva to talk about her misadventures in style and her recent turn as a M.A.C. model and spokeswoman for its AIDS fund.
Interviewing you reminds me of a line from the Gene Tierney movie “Belle Starr,” when the maid says, “She’s what them white folks call a living legend,” pronounced “leg-end.” You so are such a living leg-end! Tell me, what are you up to at the moment?

Why thank you. Well, I’m working on a new CD, but every time I open my mouth in an interview I seem to say that, and I am composing the music for “Kinky Boots,” which Harvey Fierstein, Jerry Mitchell and Daryl Roth are bringing to Broadway. It’s very exciting because it’s the first time I’ve done something like that.

So no more “Celebrity Apprentice”?
No, but it was a great thing to have done. I will always be grateful that I got the chance to represent my True Colors fund and to talk about gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual and civil rights. Not that I made a lot of money for it, mind you, but I did bring those issues to prominence. I can’t help myself — always the loudmouth.
Let’s see, I have also signed with Mark Burnett Productions to do a reality show. It’s early days, but I definitely want it to have some comedy. Nobody wants me to be serious, me included.

As the Linda Evangelista of the pop world, you should be on “Shear Genius.” I’m actually surprised you still have any hair left after all the work you’ve done on it.
I know, right? It’s not as white as it was because it broke off. So I stopped coloring it for a while and just use tint now, but I have to say I am tired of being bland.
I have a wig for when I go outside among the regular folks, so they don’t feel uncomfortable because I have a Day-Glo color somewhere in my hair. I can look normal but for everyday, for when I look in my mirror, I gotta feel better. The conservative look is killing me.

Bland and conservative? The last words I’d ever associate with someone known for her statement-making glamour. You’re now shilling for M.A.C. — how important an arrow was makeup in your quiver?
First up, the M.A.C. AIDS fund is very important to me. It’s giving millions to global organizations that have unique programs to help women with H.I.V./AIDS. Women are a lot more vulnerable — socially, financially and biologically — when it comes to unprotected sex. As a woman, you always have to be negotiating with somebody else to wear a condom. So of course I jumped at the chance to be involved.
But on a more frivolous note, makeup is also important to me. I have a suitcase full of the stuff. I am just sorry I have one face to put it all on. If you saw me without makeup you wouldn’t recognize me. Thank god.
I research everything, too. Just like I am obsessed with the history of fashion, I love reading about the history of makeup.

When you were putting yourself together in the ’80s, what research material did you draw on? Was there one particular glamour icon who made you think, Mmm, I like this look, so I will multiply it by a hundred?
It would depend on the year. In the beginning, it was just war paint and more Native American looks and basically anything to flip society the bird. You don’t like it, well, wait, let me put on something else that’s really going to tweak you. Then in 1985-86 I was looking at a lot of old Hollywood glamour books and so I started to incorporate old Hollywood glamour with what I was doing.

I seem to remember an awesome Interview cover shot by Matthew Rolston that signaled that change. I think you had a chandelier on your head.
It wasn’t a chandelier. It was a headpiece inspired by Rudolf Valentino’s girlfriend … can’t remember her name.

Nazimova?
Yes, that’s her. It was based on a picture of her. They had an outfit that fitted me like curtains and I don’t wear curtains, but they had rented this beautiful headdress. And my personal stylist at the time had all these things, including a metal bra that made me think of Theda Bara so I wore that, too. I was definitely influenced by the women from the silent age and their makeup — except in Day-Glo.

What about your contemporaries at the time?
No, because I didn’t really look like them. The women back then had beautiful cheekbones, thick eyebrows, big smiles — you know, everything I didn’t. I was upset that I didn’t look like them, but I find people that have a fat face like me figure how to work with it. You can do a lot with a plain, blank face.

What about Madonna?
I definitely used to see her around in the early days. I remember the first time I saw her she was a pretty young girl, sitting on the street with a sad, determined look in her eyes. She was so cute, but I wouldn’t say we inspired each other.

Correct me if I am wrong, but weren’t you originally being marketed as the next Barbra Streisand?
That was when I was very young. Can you imagine? I was into the Ramones, the Voidoids and Deborah Harry.

Who was also obsessed with screen goddesses, especially Marilyn.
And Brigitte Bardot. Debbie was the first one to take the pinup girl thing and incorporate it into punk. You have to also understand the mixed musical influences at the time. There was a music station right in the middle of the dial — I wish I could remember the name — and they would play all the new current music alongside the Ronettes and, you know, old Elvis Presley and new Elvis Costello. Out of the musical mix came the style.

You talk a lot about retro-glamour looks. Any one you were particularly drawn to?
I loved the whole thing, but I always liked the idea of making it my own, so I wore high heels and pedal pushers, which nobody was really wearing at the time. Then I would wear a vintage ’40s top that didn’t quite go with my hair or anything for that matter. I would try anything. One time I was bleaching my mustache and I couldn’t leave it at that so all of a sudden I had two-tone hair. I never knew when to stop.

There are a lot of runway references these days to your ’80s heyday. Do you ever feel nostalgic for that period?
Sometimes, but I mostly look at it with passion. The ’80s was a really creative and brave period. Remember, it was a period of ultraconservatism and so you needed brave people to push ahead like that. When I see retro glam now, it’s not always hip, it’s usually conservative. Everyone looks like they are going to the Oscars instead of the Grammys.

How do you feel when you see yourself on the worst-dressed lists in the weeklies?
I got a lot of grief about two years ago for my faux-hawk. People were making fun of it on comedy shows. But I don’t like to walk with the pack anyway, so of course they are going to make fun of me. I don’t care. Anybody really creative is going to end up on those lists.

Talking to Lady Gaga, I got the feeling she really sees herself as a walking piece of art. Do you?
I love her. She’s living her dream, which I am all in favor of. I don’t mind being an art piece or a science experiment. Believe me, there was a period where I was a colorist’s guinea pig at Vidal Sassoon. I still want to try new things, anything that is striking and otherworldly.

Who taught you to put on makeup? Please tell me it was a drag queen.
Close. It was my mother, actually. And the women in my neighborhood in Ozone Park, Queens, who used to emulate all the movie stars of that time. They didn’t call it a salon in those days — they called it the beauty parlor — and they used to come out after a full day with hair and makeup so bright that no drag queen could compete.

Cyndi Lauper Headlines Pride Toronto’s 30th Anniversary Festival -
posted: 4th March 2010

Cyndi Lauper, one of the world's most recognized Queer icons, comes to Toronto on Saturday, July 3 2010 for a FREE concert in Queen's Park.

An unwavering advocate for LGBTTIQQ2SA* rights, Cyndi Lauper established herself as a household name with the 1983 single "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", kicking off a long career which includes more than 25 million in record sales and nominations for 13 Grammy awards, 2 Emmy awards, 2 American Music Awards, 7 American Video Awards and 18 MTV awards.

Her most recent album "Bring Ya To The Brink" affirmed her international pop diva status, even more so amongst her LGBT fans, who were featured prominently in the music video for her #1 single, "Into The Nightlife".

"It's an honor to always have the genuine affection of the gay community," Cyndi says. "They have never turned their back on me and I will never turn my back on them. We've had a long and enduring love affair."

In 2007, Lauper created the True Colors Tour, bringing together artists like Erasure, The B-52s, the Indigo Girls, Deborah Harry and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts to raise public awareness about issues facing the LGBTTIQQ2SA* communities. A year later, she founded the True Colors Fund to inspire and engage everyone-particularly those in the straight community-to become involved in the advancement of equality.

Most recently, Lauper joined Lady Gaga as a spokesperson for the 2010 MAC Viva Glam Campaign, which was established in 1994 to support people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS around the world.

The Grammy award-winning singer and Emmy award-winning actress is currently working on her newest studio album scheduled for release in June. Lauper is also featured on the new "Celebrity Apprentice" edition on NBC starting March 14 and later this year launches her own reality show.

Lauper's performance during Pride Week will be part of a full program of entertainment and activities in Queen's Park; the newest addition to the ever-expanding Pride Week site which includes eight stages over more than 22 city blocks and an attendance of more than one million. Plans for the new Queen's Park site include a beverage garden and more Pride Week Streetfair exhibitors.

"We are happy that Cyndi and her incredible team worked with us to make this happen" said Mary Zondanos, Arts & Entertainment Manager for Pride Toronto. "Her work both as a performer and an activist is an inspiration to us all. There will be tears, and I'm sure some will be mine."

Xtra caught up with Lauper in 2008, around the release of her latest album Bring Ya to the Brink:

"Lauper has always been a vocal proponent of queer rights — perhaps a logical outgrowth of support for her lesbian sister. Lauper is passionate about the need to raise queer rights in the public sphere and knows full well that music is a unifying force in the world. But the fight south of the border is a much tougher slog. When asked why Lauper is honest and direct. "I don't know, hon. You could still be fired from your job in 31 states if you're suspected of being gay, bisexual or transgendered. So I mean, things are hard right now. I don't know what our story is [in America], but I think... lack of information...? I really don't know." Read the full Xtra piece.

Lady Gaga, Cyndi Lauper on anti-AIDS mission -
posted: 4th March 2010

London, England (CNN) -- Lady Gaga has paid tribute to pop icon Cyndi Lauper as they join forces to raise HIV and AIDS awareness among women.

Gaga and Lauper told CNN's "Connect The World" women "need to put their foot down" in the bedroom.

"Cyndi is a lot of my inspiration," Gaga said, before relating how she and Lauper had met playing gay clubs in gay neighborhoods.

Lauper replied: "That's very sweet. You know I get inspired by her. I get inspired to remember myself."

Pop icon Gaga, who has enjoyed worldwide success thanks to songs such as "Poker Face," "Just Dance" and "Telephone" is known as much for her distinctive fashion sense and extravagant performances as she is for her music.

But she told CNN's Becky Anderson that she was surprised a viewer had asked her whether she wrote her own songs.

"People are asking that question?" queried Gaga. "I have written every single song I have ever sang and also produced a lot of the music."

Gaga and Lauper are on a mission, along with cosmestics giant MAC, to ensure women are tested for HIV and AIDS.

"This is not a gay disease, this is a disease plaguing women," said Gaga. "And I just want to clarify that. Because I think that's the very sort of pre-assumption, that women aren't getting tested and allowing negotiations to go on in the bedroom and are not putting their foot down."

Lauper added: "I lost a lot of friends in the eighties and nineties and it was a big heartbreak and I can't just stand by."

Gaga said that she had been a fan of MAC since she was young. "MAC is a lifestyle, it is sort of this place and Mecca near my house where I could be who I wanted to be and find myself as an individual."

She described being a role model to girls and young women as being not a burden but a privilege.

"I'm so blessed that I'm here," she said. "I'm absolutely not one of those people who's a self-obsessed, masturbatory artist who doesn't care about my fans or my effect on my fans. I have a very keen understanding of my effect or what I can do.

"And when you're in the public eye you're a role model whether you want to be or not. And I want to be."

But both women were evasive on a possible collaboration with another blonde icon -- Madonna.

"I don't know," said Lauper. "Who knows? You always keep it open."

Skin Fruit, the first US exhibition of the Dakis Joannou Collection and curated by Jeff Koons, opened at New Museum last night. Cyndi Lauper, The Edge, Michael Stipe, David La Chapelle, Terrence Koh, and Pierce Brosnan (I guess he likes art?) all headed down to the Bowery to check out the show, which is featured around the idea of the human body and original sin.

This is Mr.Koons' first time curating a show, and his name alone is sure to draw big crowds for the two year old museum. New Museum favorite Urs Fischer was of course on hand for the celebrations, as was Francesco Bonami, clearly taking a break from his Biennial Uptown.

Some of the highlights of the exhibition? A sculpture of early homo sapiens, resembling the famous pair at the Museum of Natural History, and the sculpture of the blacksploitation-era Cyndi Lauper is checking out in the picture above.

After the opening, guests headed up to the Bowery Hotel for an afterparty.

When Instyle Met Cyndi Lauper & Lady Gaga -
posted: 3rd March 2010

InStyle’s Entertainment Editor met Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper to talk style, sex and celibacy – and she discovered the girls just wanna have fun… safely.

Monday’s launch of MAC's new Viva Glam lipsticks was extra special because I got to meet and interview the campaign’s new faces - Lady GaGa and 80s pop legend Cyndi Lauper. My inner gay man could barely contain himself.

The ladies were in town to promote the MAC. campaign - From Our Lips – and to also spread the word about safe sex for women. Did you know that we ladies are more likely to become infected with HIV than men? Nope – us either.

That’s why every penny (excluding VAT) from the sale of the Viva Glam lipsticks goes towards the MAC AIDS Fund. (Lady GaGa’s shade is a gorgeous candy pink and Cyndi’s is a luscious coral red).

I can report that far from being intimidating divas both stars were charm personified. GaGa is petite and slender (nowhere near the emaciated figure some papers would have you believe) while Cyndi is quirky, sweet and spoke so softly you could barely hear her.

But before we got down to the serious stuff I just had to find out what GaGa was wearing (yep, she was making another brave fashion statement). 'My shoes are from a sex shop and so are my lace tights. Since we’re talking about sex today it’s kind of appropriate!' she laughed. 'This [points to her lace bodysuit] is actually a dress that I pinned to make it look like a leotard – it was a gift from the Pet Shop Boys who are my friends. They had their costume designer make it for me. And the hat is by Charlie Le Mindu.'

But they weren’t in London meeting zillions of journos just to talk about their wardrobes. So let’s hear it from the girls...

I guess you guys practice what you preach with regards to safe sex?
GaGa: I made the choice to be single because I don’t have the time to get to know anybody at the moment. Even Lady GaGa can be celibate! If you can’t get to know somebody, you shouldn’t be having sex with them. In this day and age, we’ve grown up and we now know that you just can’t be that free.

So how can we learn about safe sex via lipstick?
GaGa: Well, you can give it to your daughter, your sister, your Mum, your friends and tell them about the safe sex message when you do it. Every single penny, except VAT goes to the MAC AIDS Fund. Not only are you saving the life of the person that you give the lipstick too, but also the people that the money is going to.
Cyndi: This is from our lips to your mouth. Lipstick is a very empowering, universal thing – women of any age use lipstick. It’s a tool to take with you in your handbag, along with a condom to remind yourself about safe sex.

Why do you think so many women are being infected with HIV? Are we just too shy to be carrying condoms?
Cyndi: No, it’s because a lot don’t realise it’s not a gay disease.
GaGa: Women are the opposite of shy actually. Here in the UK I think the statistic is something like 70% of women that are sexually active have never been tested for HIV. And 80% of those women who are in monogamous relationships are having unprotected sex. And they think it’s OK because they have an agreement with their partner, but we all know how men can be.

We sure do.

She donned a lobster hat at the weekend, but today Lady Gaga went for a headpiece in the shape of a giant black flower. The poker face - or rather petal face - singer was in London to launch MAC make-up's new Viva Glam lipsticks, alongside fellow spokesmodel Cyndi Lauper. All proceeds from the £12.50 lipsticks goes to the MAC Aids fund. The organisation was established in 1994 to support those affected by HIV and Aids around the world and so far has raised over £100m. Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper follow in the footsteps of Dita Von Teese, Pamela Anderson, Fergie and Mary J Blige, who have all been signed up by the brand to front their Viva Glam products. The two singer's had a hand in picking their MAC shades. While Gaga went for a bubble gum pink, the Girls Just Want To Have Fun legend chose a warm, coral, red.

CYNDI KISSES – AND TELLS -
posted: 1st March 2010

Q: You are a music icon with fans from all over the world. You are a fan of Lady Gaga’s, and she is a big fan of yours. How does it feel to be doing a M·A·C VIVA GLAM campaign together?

A: I am really looking forward to it. Lady Gaga is the undisputed breakout star of the year, and I have been cheering for her. She’s a very cool and different artist. As far as working together on this campaign, we share a passion for fashion and music and performance. And yes, cosmetics. I think we are going to have a blast.

Q: HIV/AIDS was ravaging the world in the early ’80s, a time when you were becoming one of the most important female singers in history. How did AIDS affect you during that time?

A: I lost a lot of dear friends to AIDS before we even knew what it was. People are still dying more than twenty years later, and we have to help find a cure.

Q: The M·A·C AIDS Fund has supported numerous GLBT organizations around the world. You have also been a vocal advocate for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality and cofounded the True Colors Fund. What motivated you to do this?

A: I’m not a politician. I am just a mom who happens to have the benefit of being famous and can bring attention to something that is wrong and needs to be righted. I think standing up for one another is something that we all have to do. So that we all count. I want my son to live in a country free of bigotry and hatred. That won't be possible until we all have the same rights – that one segment of our population isn't given less so therefore can be treated as less, ya know?

Q: What do you hope to bring to the VIVA GLAM campaign?

A: The VIVA GLAM campaign has always been amazing. I am thrilled to be part of it in 2010.

Q: Tell us about your new VIVA GLAM Lipstick/Lipglass colour?

A: A really fabulous red…and it’s called Cyndi. How cool is that?

Q: M·A·C VIVA GLAM Lipsticks and Lipglasses have raised over 150 Million dollars for the M·A·C AIDS Fund to help people living with HIV/AIDS around the world. How do you feel about this?

A: I am very proud to be involved with the M·A·C AIDS Fund, and I am very glad to lend my name and time to help raise money for people living with HIV and AIDS.

Q: Women account for almost half of the HIV/AIDS cases around the world, and your new VIVA GLAM campaign will focus on helping women living with HIV/AIDS. You and Lady Gaga create one very powerful voice. What would you say to young women today about staying safe from HIV/AIDS?

A: Be smart, be careful, protect yourself, practice safe sex and look out for your sisters to make sure they are doing the same. But there are also huge populations of women in many places like South Africa and in the Congo who are becoming infected through rape. For them, I ask the world to stand up and get involved. They are all sisters, mothers and daughters, and they need our help.
